Dr. Andres Fuenmayor

Sports & Performance Psychiatry

Dr. Andres Fuenmayor is a psychiatrist providing mental health care for adolescents and adults, with a focus on resilience, performance, and comprehensive evidence-based treatment. He advanced his work in global mental health research at Columbia University and the New York State Psychiatric Institute, contributing to initiatives aimed at expanding access to high-quality, evidence-based care for underserved communities. He completed his psychiatry residency training at Duke University, where he gained broad experience in psychotherapy, medication management, interventional psychiatry, and the treatment of complex psychiatric conditions. He continues to expand his expertise working in the Sports and Performance Psychiatry Department at Stanford University’s, working at the intersection of mental health, well-being, and performance. His training has included work with collegiate and professional athletes, with attention to performance anxiety, concentration and focus, sleep and recovery, injury and rehabilitation, identity, and transitions throughout an athletic career. His approach recognizes that sustainable performance depends not only on addressing psychiatric symptoms, but also on strengthening resilience, psychological flexibility, healthy routines, and the ability to function effectively under pressure.

Clinical Focus

Across diverse academic and community-based clinical settings, Dr. Fuenmayor has evaluated and treated individuals experiencing a wide range of concerns, including ADHD, anxiety disorders, OCD, mood disorders, trauma-related conditions, eating disorders, substance use concerns, and complex psychiatric presentations. His clinical approach integrates thoughtful diagnostic assessment, individualized medication management, and psychotherapy to support both symptom stabilization and meaningful functioning in daily life.

Specialized Training

Dr. Fuenmayor has advanced training in interventional psychiatry, including clinical experience with neuromodulation treatments such as electroconvulsive therapy (ECT) and exposure to transcranial magnetic stimulation (TMS). He has also completed a Certificate of Additional Training through the International Society for Sports Psychiatry (ISSP), strengthening his work with athletes and performance-focused individuals. His psychotherapy training spans multiple evidence-based modalities, including Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT), Dialectical Behavioral Therapy (DBT), Acceptance and Commitment Therapy (ACT), psychodynamic psychotherapy, and supportive therapy allowing him to tailor treatment to each individual’s goals and developmental stage.

In his work with athletes, students, and performance-driven individuals, Dr. Fuenmayor focuses on enhancing mental resilience, emotional regulation, focus, recovery, and sustainable performance. He understands the pressures associated with competitive environments and high expectations, and he integrates evidence-based psychological strategies with medical insight to help individuals perform at their highest level without sacrificing long-term well-being.

A core component of Dr. Fuenmayor’s philosophy involves lifestyle medicine and the integration of nutrition, sleep, movement, and behavioral strategies into mental health care. He believes that sustainable mental wellness and performance are supported not only through therapy and medication, but also through optimizing daily habits and overall physical health.

Committed to equity and access, Dr. Fuenmayor has helped develop initiatives serving underserved and immigrant communities, including culturally informed care for Spanish-speaking patients. He is fully bilingual in English and Spanish and provides care in both languages.
